Sunday 31st January 2010

Ferns Utd 1 - 0 Gorey Celtic

Celtic travelled away to Premier league Ferns Utd in last Sundays Wexford Cup 2nd round tie.
In a game that Celtic dominated for long periods, a defensive lapse 20 mins from time saw Ferns edge through, their reward a home game vs. Bridge Rovers in Round Three.

The Game started 15 minutes late, referee Mark Hogan giving the heavy frost a chance to thaw. The early exchanges were even, Celtic giving as good as their premier opposition. David O Brien and Craig Connor were having success on each wing, delivering in crosses that just needed the finishing touches.

Celtics Best opportunity came on 25 minutes, a Danny Reilly chipped effort from 18 yards hitting the crossbar, Ferns had their chances, with Big Jack being equal to anything ferns had to offer.

H.T. 0-0

Trying to be unbaised, but Celtic totally dominated the 2nd half, whilst goal scoring chances were at a minimum, possession wise we lorded it. William Doyle and Danny Reilly were totally in control in the middle of the park, the back 4, in which Dave Gahan was simply outstanding were camped on the halfway line.
All the play was in the Ferns half of the pitch, the only thing missing was the bounce of a breaking ball that would let Celtic in for a deserved goal.

On 70 minutes the winner arrived. Hesitant defending on the corner of the 18 yard box, saw a Ferns attacker steal poccession, close in on goal, on strike home from 8 yards.
Celtics response was magnificent, wave after wave of attacks saw Celtic pin Ferns deep into their half, the last 20 minutes was total Celtic pressure but ultimately no reward, as Ferns hung on for their victory.

A very sporting game from both sets of players. Man of match for Celtic, Dave Gahan, followed very closely by William Doyle and Danny Reilly who both worked extremely hard for the team. We will play worse this season and win games.
Very Proud of the team and performance but disappointed with the end result.

Next Saturday, we play in the 4th Round of the Leinster Junior Cup, Away vs. Butterkrust Utd in Poppintree Park at 2pm.
We are the last survivors from County Wexford left in the competition, a win in Dublin would see us into the last 32 of the competition.
Butterkrust play in Div 1 of the AUL Saturday section, they beat Manortown Utd, 5-2 in the last round.

Not knowing to much regarding our opposition, we will be expecting a difficult game, if we bring the qualities that we have shown in our last 2 performances we should not be far away from winning this tie.

Team: Big Jack, Paul Timmins, David Melia, Mark Tyndall, David Gahan, Craig Connor, Danny Reilly, William Doyle, David O'Brien, Wes Fitzpatrick, Tiernan O'Gara.

Subs: Phelim Gallagher for O'Gara (60 mins), Brendan Doyle for Timmins (65 mins), Ger Carey for O'Brien (75 mins)
