Shamrock Rovers 1 - 5 Gorey Celtic B
Celtic made the trip to Enniscorthy worthwhile with a high scoring win over the home side Shamrock Rovers, the win keeps Celtic 2 points clear at the top of the table.
Both teams started the game looking nervous, with neither team being in control and very few efforts on goal, but once Celtic took the lead on 25 mins, a great headed effort from Steve Allen, it was all one way traffic in Celtics favour. Celtic really upped the tempo of their play and started to really attack Rovers back four, it was only a question of when not if they would improve on their one goal advantage.
Celtics second goal game from the boot of Steve Allen this time, he went into a tackle with a defender and the ball ended up nestled in the bottom corner of the net. Shamrock Rovers were hanging on for dear life, hoping to keep the score at 2-0 so theyd have something to play for in the 2nd half.
H.T.: 0-2
10 mins into the 2nd half the game was over, the excellent Steve Allen laying claim to the match ball, when he finished smartly after being put through 1 on 1 with the keeper, giving him no chance with the finish.
Shamrock Rovers had now only pride to play for and to their credit they never stopped trying but found the Celtic team in an unforgiving mood as they passed the ball around with with ease. On 75 mins it was 4, Joe Roche from the edge of the penalty area guiding a crisp shot into the net. On 80 mins Rovers got a consolation goal, but with 5 mins remaining David Fitzgerald made it 5-1.
Another good day at the office, looking dangerous going forward and as usual teams have to work very hard to score against us, Allen looked very sharp up front with Roche pulling the strings in midfield.
Team: Sam Griffith, Steven Finn, Chris Cullen, Brian Maher, Ken Price, John Nolan, Joe Roche, John Lavery, Paul Hayden, Terry Carey, Steve Allen.
Subs: David Fitzgerald for Carey (60 mins), Alan Fogarty for Nolan (65 mins).
