Ballindaggin 1 - 2 Gorey Celtic
The Top two teams in the division met in Ballindaggin on Sunday morning with Celtic coming out on top after a tough battling performance.
The hurricane blowing the length of the pitch insure that this game was always going to be a game of two halves, Celtic had the wind advantage in the first half but it wastnt until just before the half-time whistle that they got on the scoreboard and in truth they should have being a couple of goals down by that stage. Sammy Griffith making 2 or 3 fine 1 on 1 saves.
The small size of the Ballindaggin pitch ment that Celtic tried to get the ball forward too quick and resulted in the wind catching the ball and carring it harmlessly over the endline. Celtic only had 2 or 3 chances worth noting, Colin McShanes effort for 18 yards being cleared of the line and a Terry Carey free kick, which resulted in the goal, the keeper unable to judge the ball properly in the strong wind, he kept it out of the net only for hte ball to land at Steve Allen, who couldnt miss from 6 yards.
Would a 1 goal advantage be enough playing into the wind in the second half
H.T.: 0-1
Ballindaggin really came at Celtic at the start of the 2nd half, looking to use the wind, they were having plenty of long range efforts on goal with Griffith in goal being able to deal with most efforts fairly comfortably. Playing against the wind Celtic had to keep the ball on the ground, any high clearance blowing back in on top of the back four and started to play some good football.
The home side continued to attack Celtic but with the back four looking strong, Celtic were always dangerous on the break with the pace of the Carey brothers up front. Celtics 2nd goal came on 75 mins, a short free kick, found Ger Carey who but in a dangerous cross which hit John Lavery's shinpad and flew into the net.
To their credit Ballindaggin never gave up and pulled a goal back in the injury time but Celtic held firm to record a good away win.
